i never really thought about subcultures very much or in this much detail. i thought the fieldwork on the homeless, "House for the Homeless" was extremely eye opening and interesting. im excited to do fieldwork on a specific group although i cant decide what subculture to research due to the fact that there are so many different groups. ones i belong too, and then there are groups that i probably know nothing about or even know they exist. i think it will be hard but definitely worth it in the end and exciting to find out all the other subcultures that other students are picking...

chapter one
i read a variety of different readings from the 'body ritual among the nacirema' stories for my english class in high school and i didnt catch on at all. i thought that it was so weird and couldnt figure out who these people were until the teacher explained it was us. kind of embarrassing because i judged these people because i couldnt understand them yet in the end i realized those people were me. i think it is so neat how much they can make the familiar strange.. our assignment after reading was to pick an everyday thing and try to make it sound strange. we read them to our class and tried the classmates guessed what they thought it was. it was so surprisingly hard to do. therefore i definitely agree with the text when it states, "What is often more difficult to achieve than making the unknown become familiar is making the familiar strange" because if we dont know about something we can do research to make it familiar but already understanding everyday things is much more difficult to explain it in different terms.
